Friend of Scholarship Award 2007

Dick Johns, longtime executive director of Quill and Scroll, was awarded the 2007 Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award from IJEA on Sept. 14. Johns’ statewide recognition and thanks for his three decades of service to scholastic journalism nationally and in Illinois was presented by John Gonczy, award coordinator and adviser at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, at the Illinois State High School Association conference at the University of Illinois. Gonczy said Johns had made a difference in his life when, as a new adviser, he attended one of Johns’ adviser workshops. While Johns has retired as Quill and Scroll director, he still teaches at the University of Iowa and remains active in high school journalism.
