“Empowering your Students” at the IJEA Fall Conference on Sept. 16

NOTE: Our 2016 Fall Conference has already taken place. Thank you to everyone who contributed to its success! We will leave this preview in place until information about the 2017 conference is available.

Please mark your calendars and keep an eye on your high school mailbox for a postcard that is on its way announcing the 2016 IJEA Fall Conference coming up Friday, Sept. 16, at the Illini Union on the U of I campus.  This important postcard will provide guidance on how to register for the conference online and how to get information about conference sessions, parking options, directions and maps.

Our keynote speaker is Mitch Eden, the 2015 Dow Jones News Fund’s National Journalism Teacher of the Year.  His topic of Empowering Your Students is one that connects significantly with a major recent event in the state of Illinois: Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signing of the Speech Rights of Student Journalists Act. Eden will discuss how he has produced a culture of empowerment among his award-winning staff at the Kirkwood Call, which has won the First Amendment Press Freedom Award and the CSPA Silver Crown Hybrid Award as well as dozens more during Eden’s nine years at Kirkwood High School in Missouri.

There will be more than 25 sessions available to motivate and energize you and your students.  Topics this year include:

§  Upping your reporting game for 2016 presidential election

§  Reporting techniques that dig deep and get noticed

§  Writing about diversity issues and offering community journalism

§  Putting your publication online

§  Upgrading your sports writing and sports photography

§  Interacting with your audience on social media

§  Learning the ins and outs of film criticism

§  Following the 10 habits of a successful adviser, and much MORE!

Due to popular demand, the Feature Writing Write-off competition will be offered again at this year’s conference.  See the IJEA Conference website, https://media.illinois.edu/ijea for instruction on signing up for the write-off as well registering for the conference.  The website will continue to be updated with titles and descriptions of all the sessions to be offered.
