IJEA
Is Off and Running
by President Sarah Doerner
I
would first like to thank the members
of the IJEA Board for voting
to entrust me with the position
of President of IJEA at their June
10, 2006 meeting in Springfield,
IL.
Having been a journalism teacher,
yearbook adviser, school
newspaper adviser, literary magazine
adviser and Quill and Scroll chapter
adviser for many years, I understand
the frustrations of those various
jobs and also the sheer joy of success
in working with students as they
grow in their knowledge and achievements
in scholastic journalism. IJEA has
been serving scholastic media in
Illinois since 1988. My goals for
the year are simple and complex
at the same time - to review
and reflect on the past history
and achievements of IJEA, to determine
where the organization is today,
and to help direct its future along
with its board of directors and
its membership as it promotes high
standards in scholastic journalism
and elevates the status of journalism
programs in secondary schools across
the state of Illinois.
To that end, an officers meeting
was scheduled August 15, 2006 at
Eastern Illinois University with
IJEA Ex. Secretary Sally Turner
to address
several topics for discussion. These
items are outlined in the article
New IJEA Officers Hold Energized
Meeting.
I am happy to report that several
of the items that were discussed
then
as things to do for the year have
already come about. Some of these
include reviewing the goals and
purposes of IJEA, recreating our
newsletter, updating the website,
and beginning a strong new membership
drive.
