“Empowering your Students” at the 2017 IJEA Fall Conference on Sept. 15

PLEASE NOTE: The 2017 IJEA Fall Conference has already taken place. We will update this page in the spring with information about the 2018 Fall Conference. In the meantime, the information below about the 2017 conference will give you an idea of what to expect. Thanks for your interest and your support!

Dear Newspaper and Yearbook Adviser:

If you are looking for the ultimate experience to combine motivation with education for your high school newspaper and yearbook staffs, please accept our invitation to the 2017 Illinois Journalism Education Association (IJEA) Fall Conference at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on Friday, Sept. 15.

The last couple of years will be looked back on as important milestones for journalism. We are marking the start of a new era in the news media where journalists on all levels, including high school, are reasserting their influence and duty to find truth and hold the powers that be accountable. Our keynote speaker and the 20-plus individual sessions will address the challenges that lie ahead in this new age.

We are thrilled to have Ash-har Quraishi  as our keynote speaker. Quraishi is a reporter for NBC 5 in Chicago, a former correspondent for Al Jazeera America and the Islamabad Bureau Chief for CNN. His topic: The News Media; Rediscovering Its Voice.

Please keep your eye on the IJEA Conference website https://media.illinois.edu/ijea for information on the conference and the individual sessions we are offering, including:

  • Propaganda and the media
  • Smartphone journalism
  • Analytics to make your program stronger
  • Concept-driven story telling
  • How to cover a tragedy
  • Tips on adding a broadcast element to your newscast
  • Plus individual sessions on editing; photography; better design for newspapers; yearbooks and websites; staff management and much more!

AND DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, we are expanding the write-off competitions to include news writing as well as feature writing. See the IJEA Conference website, https://media.illinois.edu/ijea for instruction on signing up for the write-offs as well registering for the conference.  Please note: Our capacity for attendance this year is 600 students and advisers.  To reserve your spot at the conference please register by Sept. 8, 2017.  The admission fee for early registration is $15 per person either in advance or at the door.  For those who register after Sept. 8, 2017, if there is still space available, the cost is $17 per person.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: the purpose of this conference has always been to help high school newspaper and yearbook programs become stronger and to instill in students exceptional skills that will help them to succeed in high school, in college and in life.  We want to make sure that in these tough budgetary times in the state of Illinois the cost is not prohibitive for you and your students.  If that is the case, please contact Lynn Holley either by phone or email and we will arrange to make this fun and motivating experience affordable.

We look forward to seeing you at the IJEA Fall Conference on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017.  Have a great rest of the summer!
